Test Driving a Land Rover Defender 90 Soft Top MY02

Che il modello Soft Top non sia mai stato il massimo del comfort questo è risaputo. Quanto la Land Rover si sia impegnata nel rendere questa affermazione vera lo si può constatare però solo dopo averne acquistato uno. La prima cosa che mi è saltata in mente girandogli intorno ed una volta a bordo è stato l'accattivante bollettino nel quale sono stati elencati, uno per uno, tutti gli upgrades del modello 2002....compresa la nuova capote in PVC.
La definizione di "telone autocarro" sarebbe già una qualifica impropria per questo oggetto, un termine più confacente è piuttosto PEZZA. Una pezza in PVC buttata su di un'intelaiatura inadeguata a tenerla in tensione. E' di fatto in tale maniera che la pezza veste, tristemente floscia, un mortificato Defender...guerriero ferito nell'orgoglio dalla infelice scelta di chi ha concepito il suo abito. Una volta in movimento la capote urla tutti i suoi limiti ed il frastuono a 100 Km/h è veramente insopportabile. Pochi chilometri e sono costretto a fermarmi: la pezza è uscita dalla sua regolare posizione ed a questo punto capisco che difficilmente mi porterò questo "affare" appresso per molto tempo ancora. Altrettanto scandalosa e ben più grave risulta la totale assenza di una struttura di sicurezza che garantisca l'incolumità dei passeggeri in caso di ribaltamento, un vero e proprio attentato alla vita di chi circola a bordo di un mezzo che, nel terzo millennio, dovrebbe soddisfare parametri di sicurezza ben maggiori. A quanto pare questo è un discorso che esula il Defender Soft Top MY02. Queste due annotazioni gravissime fanno passare in secondo piano altre mancanze che un appassionato potrebbe benevolmente giustificare e mi riferisco all'assenza di una luce interna, all'assenza della serratura del portello posteriore ed alla maniera in cui il top è fissato alla carrozzeria...puro "Farm Style".
Eppure un Roll Bar è presente a catalogo (ALR5539...) così come una capote più degna di tale nome (STC7000)...sarebbe stato troppo pensarci?

Ho fatto queste considerazioni con grande tristezza, la tristezza di un appassionato che non ha mai guidato altro nella sua vita.

Everybody knows that the Soft Top version has never been the most comfortable, but only after buying one, you realise just how much commitment Land Rover has put in to keeping this fame.
The first thing that came to my mind when I inspected it, and once behind the steering wheel, was that very attractive bulletin, in which were listed one by one, all the upgrades of the model 2002…. including the new “top in PVC”. To be able to call it a top requires a very remarkable fantasy; a better word to define this item would be a RAG. A rag in PVC, thrown over a poor quality frame that is incapable of keeping the necessary tension. In this way the rag fits a mortified Defender …. warrior hit in its pride by the bad choice of who made its dress. Once on the road the top screams all its limits and I can’t handle the noise at 60mh/h. After a few miles I had to stop because the rag came out of the rail frames. At this point I realised that I won’t go around with this thing much longer. Not to mention the scandalous lack of a protective structure for passengers, in the case of a rollover. A real shame for a vehicle that in the third millennium should meet much better safety measures. From what I can see this question doesn’t regard the D90 Soft Top MY02. In comparison to these two serious points the fact of the absence of the courtesy light and rear door key or the way the top is secured to the body, become only frivolous particulars… something an enthusiast can lovingly call Land Rover “farm style”. But a cage is in the catalogue (ALR 5539) as is a better quality top (STC 7000) would it have been asking too much to include them?
